Rhythm and Dynamics in Tamacun Musical Journey Module 3 Discussion Subscribe Due Dates: Parts 1 and 2: Sunday, 11:59 p.m. PT Part 3: Tuesday, 11:59 p.m. PT Instructions: This discussion consists of three parts. Submit Part 1 and Part 2 as a single, 300-word submission, typed directly into the submission box (that is, not as an attachment), by Sunday at 11:59pm PT. Submit Part 3 by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. PT. Please follow the instructions carefully for each part as described below. Part 1: Reflect on Content (100 words maximum) This week we deal with difficult issues like race and cultural expectations. We also talk about dynamics and rhythm. In roughly 100 words: Choose one of these topics to reflect on, and give an example from this week’s listening that helps demonstrate your thoughts. Be specific in your language and in the examples you give. The goal is both to demonstrate your own understanding of the terms, and to help expand others’ understanding of them. This is the shorter of the two sections; Part 2 represents your main submission. Part 2: Outside Example (200 words maximum) Think of an example among the music you listen to that might explore and demonstrate one or more of these concepts. Post a video/link (e.g., YouTube) that applies one or more of your ideas from Part 1 to a song or performance you are familiar with and enjoy. It does not have to be Western Art Music (i.e., what is sometimes loosely called “classical”)—and ideally will not be, unless that is the music that you, personally, know and listen to. In roughly 200 words, connect the song or performance to the concepts you defined in Part 1. Be specific in tying the sample to these ideas, including listing time stamps if necessary to support your points. The idea is that you, as the foremost expert on the music you already listen to and enjoy, are introducing both the song and your ideas to your classmates. You want to help them hear what you are hearing, so they can engage with your sample and your thoughts about it. This is the longer of the two sections; it represents the bulk of your submission. Use the “Insert Stuff” option at the top of the text box to insert your YouTube link. It’s the one with the four different shapes stacked up, in the middle of the editing options. Insert Stuff icon in Brightspace Part 3: Respond to at Least Two Peers After you post your discussion, reply to at least 2 other students’ posts. Look for students with zero or one response. Write 25 or so well-considered words that engage directly with Part 2 of that student’s post–their outside example. Avoid the temptation to “review” their post (e.g., “That’s interesting and I liked it. Nice job!”) and instead engage directly with the content of it (“I agree with these two points but wondered about this third one because…”). Now, do the same for a second student, again looking for those with zero or one response so far. You will receive up to 1 point of credit for each engaged response, for a maximum of 2 points for Part 3. See Rubric for specific grading criteria. Course Learning Outcomes: CLO 5: Think and write critically about music using the content and concepts of the class. CLO 6: Experience live or recorded performances and knowledgeably apply the information learned in this course.
