Student (Mahnaz ) posted: The plant I would like to discuss in my forum belongs to flowering plants. It is the Arabian Jasmine (Jasminum sambac). The Arabian Jasmine belongs to the Oleaceae family. It is a native plant of Asia. The Arabian Jasmine are white showy, with exceptionally fragrant flowers, with broad evergreen leaves. They grow in evenly moist but well-drained soil in full sunlight to partly shady areas. The plant also has the ability to climb, if desired. Usually, these plants are pruned to shape and are propagated to be plucked during the summer months. Although the Arabian Jasmine flowers are picked in the summer months, this is when they are in full bloom. The flowers are produced throughout the year in Asia. The primary use of the Arabian Jasmine flowers is for ceremonial purposes. Many religions have adopted these flowers for deities during processions, funerals, during weddings as well as other milestone occasions. They are also used as hair accessories for many Asian women as a means of decoration during weddings or any occasion. Apart from ceremonial purposes, the Arabian Jasmine flowers are dried to create fragrant teas as well as perfumes, and oils. The Arabian Jasmine are commercially grown as well. There are flower markets where these flowers are sold all over China, India, Nepal, Pakistan. You can find these plants in residences as well. Although the Arabian Jasmine belongs to a variety of different Jasmine flower families, these can be substituted for other similar looking flowers belonging to the Jasmine family that also produce similar fragrances. I have a personal connection to the Arabian Jasmine flowers; I grew up with them in our front yard. With the slightest breeze and the windows being opened, it would smell like heaven! We at home called them ‘Yasmin’ flowers. As kids, we plucked the buds and strung them into small garlands as halos over our heads. The fascinating thing about these flowers is, they are absolutely low maintenance and do not require any special treatment, unlike orchids.
