Discovering Connection Project Stage 1 Discovering Connection Project Stage 1                                                                     Paintings       Pablo Picasso “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” ” was painted in 1907 and is considered one of the most influential paintings of the 20th century. The painting depicts five nude women with distorted facial features. The painting is set in a brothel in Avignon, France.    The Chinese painting “One Hundred Horses” was painted during the Tang Dynasty (618-906 CE). The painting depicts a herd of horses galloping across a river. The painting is a masterwork of Chinese art.       The American painting “Nighthawks” was painted by Edward Hopper in 1942. The painting depicts three people sitting in a diner late at night. The painting is an American icon.    The Italian painting “The Birth of Venus” was painted by Sandro Botticelli in 1486. The painting depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea. The painting is one of the most famous paintings in the world.         What the three have in common is that all three paintings depict people or figures in a setting. Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” is set in a brothel; Hopper’s “Nighthawks” is set in a diner; and Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” is set on the shore. All three paintings also feature distorted or exaggerated features. In “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” the women have distorted facial features. In “Nighthawks,” the people have exaggeratedly long shadows. In “The Birth of Venus,” the goddess Venus has an exaggeratedly large body. Therefore, all three paintings are considered masterpieces in their respective cultures. Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” is considered to be one of the most influential paintings of the 20th century. The Chinese painting “One Hundred Horses” is considered to be a masterwork of Chinese art. The American painting “Nighthawks” is an American icon.   All of the information about art can be found in the reading resources “Visual Elements Of Art” and it will be very useful to know more about the art from the different cultures. These help us to know where to look, and show us what is important in the painting.    Can you please help me with stage 2?    Explaining the historical and cultural contexts of your examples   Explaining what your examples have in common and what is different by pointing to specifics in your examples. An introductory paragraph that identifies the Humanities field you chose your examples from and explains why this field was of interest to you. Try to avoid telling the reader what you intend to do in your paper and see if you can preview your conclusion. Descriptions of each of your examples that include the following information, as appropriate. The example’s title and its author, creator, or artist’s full name. Some historical and cultural contexts for the example. This might include information about its creator, historical events from the time, and/or some contextual information about the culture. An explanation of what your three examples have in common and how they are different based on a detailed analysis of the examples to show how you came to this conclusion. In your analysis, you should: Use at least one of the resources in the classroom that is directly related to the Humanities field your paper focuses on. For instance, if you are comparing three poems, ensure that your resource(s) from the classroom is about analyzing literature. Rely on at least two of the terms or interpretative methods from the classroom resource(s) in your analysis of the examples. For example, if you are looking at three poems, you could use metaphor and rhyme scheme. Underline or bold the terms or methods of interpretation from the class you use in your paper. Explain the terms or methods before or as you use them. Provide specifics from your examples that you are analyzing using the terms or methods. For instance, if you are looking at three poems, you should quote the lines you analyze (not the whole poem). If you are looking at three paintings, you should describe what you are analyzing, or you could even use images overlaid with arrows to help illustrate your points. A concluding paragraph that offers some summative concluding remarks about what you learned about all three of the cultures your examples were from through comparing and contrasting your three examples. Did you learn that all three of these cultures express similar sentiments about parenting, for example? Did you learn that the attitude towards colonization was different in Spain, Africa and South America? Think about how your examples informed you about the similarities and the differences between humans from the cultures you covered.
