A close reading essay that examines one russian fairytale we discussed in class (I can provide the fairytale and guidance).

Give a detailed, text-based interpretation of a work of your choice. You are expected to focus on a specific text or a part of the text, and shed light onto its different elements (images, characters, scenery/settings, tone and the overall message/meaning). Show the significance of these elements in your eyes. Interpret and explain. Close reading is an essay/exercise that shows attention to the subtle moves within the text, and emphasizes the specific, concrete elements, while eventually explaining how the details analyzed relate to the overarching theme and the main point of the work of art. So, again, interpret and explain, based on evidence, USE IN TEXT CITATIONS. The goal is to use close reading as a technique through which you unlock the secret of the work you’re writing on. You can write about two works as well, but keep in mind that the paper should be concise and relatively short. Since close reading emphasizes textual evidence, you need to cite the text you are analyzing. Your commentary needs to be compelling you DO have full freedom to interpret the work as you see it. There is no right interpretation or reading, but a compelling/convincing interpretation based on evidence is essential. Show your ability to read thoroughly, to relate and connect details, and make sense of them, both on the tree and the forest level. Tone:While personal voice and perspective are encouraged, I propose that you try to convey them primarily through objective analysis in third person. This is not obligatory any tone or perspective is allowed as far as I’m concerned you can say I and stuff like that but you are more likely to write a good CRE if you imagine yourself in a position of a serious, level-headed scholar refraining her/himself from getting too personal. Advice:Limit yourself do not try to go for the whole thing. Close reading proper will always be longer than the story itself. So, find an angle, a single thread you want to pull, focus on it, and relate it to your main point without overdoing it. Just make a connection, do not belabor your ideas. Avoid excessive summarizing. Assume your readers already know the story. While summary and citations will be necessary, it is still important to comment analytically on the stuff you deal with. Cite, then comment. You want to present a reading/interpretation/explanation, not a mere reproduction of the work you choose to focus on. Write from a comfortable place. Do not worry about what I want , but about what you want to say. Pick a work that you truly liked and write with pleasure and without pressure. This prompt is meant to orient you, not constrain you. The story I think is best to write about is the flying ship. It is about 3 sons who go off and try to win a content that the Tsar sent out to the towns people. I attached the story. I think a great concept to focus on is the idea of compassion in this fairy tale. This concept is mainly show in n old man in the story who tells the youngest son he must let everyone on the ship and help them in order to succeed. He helped them and they ended up being pivotal to his success to win the Tsar’s challenge. The story is trying to say how people who are compassionate and help people ultimately fair better off in life. And you should always treat people nicely and with compassion rather than with judgement and greed like some characters in other fairytales.
